Looking at this week’s PTAC Employee Spotlight Daija Smith you wouldn’t be able to tell she absolutely HATED P.E. class in high school. In fact, she recently confessed to us that, back then, she disliked any form of exercise at all! Then, she says, she discovered Group Fitness.
Any of you who have attended her classes would certainly agree that she is not only a wonderful person and a fantastic instructor, she is a true athlete. A far cry from what she considered herself growing up. Now she loves every bit of it, a love which grew since the first time she took a cardio kick boxing class.
Daija is one of our Les Mils instructors and she teaches BodyStep. She is amazing!! In her words, “BodyStep is so much more than just cardio. You get cross training, you get strength training. It has it all!” She would dearly love to convey to anyone thinking about trying it out to not be intimidated!!
To define BodyStep, PTAC style: Basic stepping, just like walking up & down stairs, is at the heart of BodyStep- it’s a full-body cardio workout to really tone your butt and thighs. It is also a combination of basic step moves and others like burpees, push-ups and weight plate exercises to work your upper body. Plus there are always lots of options to get you through your workout safely. (This helps for someone just starting out.) Yet, Daija says, “This is definitely not Jane Fonda’s workout anymore!!”
Other than spending her time on exercise, Daija also loves spending time with her husband Dom and the new house the two of them are building together. Wow!
She says she loves learning a new release for Step and watching the impact and the excitement on her participants faces and in their routines. She loves watching them change their lives through exercise.
One last little tidbit Daija asked us to share for her is her desire to bring back the exercise leotard. “People should not be afraid to try something new!”
Come see Daija in action and have a great work out at the same time! Her BodyStep class is Monday @ 5:15 p.m. & every other Friday @ 9:30 a.m.
